Everyday is a Holiday – Calendars, Events, History, and Fun!

Fun · Read in 6 minutes

I like things that are able to be categorized, listed, bullet-pointed, calculated, mapped, and calendarized. No doubt, I am someone who likes orderly things, like financial analysis, CMAs, geotagging, address validation, mining databases, and browsing calendars.

In a positive and reflective way, I believe there’s something to remember (and hopefully celebrate) every day: life, family, history, and holidays. The rest of this blog post shares information about our todays, tomorrows, and yesterdays – but not in a heavy way, just for browsing. 🙂

Examples of major holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Presidents’ Day
  • Easter Sunday
  • Memorial Day
  • Flag Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Christmas
  • New Year’s Eve

Other holidays come from:

  • non-profit, political, and for-profit organizations
  • companies
  • sports teams
  • state / city / local entities
  • clubs
  • common interests

Types of events:

  • Celebrity birthdays
  • “This day in history”
  • Anniversaries
  • Birthstones
  • Shopping days
  • Holidays in other countries

If you want a one-stop-shop for a list of official calendar events (e.g. holidays, ancient calendars, DST, NASA, today in history, time zones, voter registration, etc.), http://www.usa.gov/Topics/Reference_Shelf/Calendars.shtml is a great reference. The rest of the links below may cover more than just “official business” and a variety of topics. My favorite finds are in bold.
